When we approach therapy from a psychodynamic perspective, we look at how past experience shapes our life. Sometimes it's easily apparent to see how our beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors have been influenced by the past, and sometimes it is very subtle. We look at thoughts and feelings that originated in the past, learn to accept them and express feelings about the past, and then we use this understanding to help us improve our current life and relationships. You can understand why this is also known as insight-oriented therapy. In this theory, the relationship with the therapist is of primary importance in that it is through this relationship that one learns how to deal with other relationships in one's life
